Course Objectives

Students are facing a real world that requires practiced approaches to communicating with industry professionals, clientele, patients, youth, and the general public that are increasingly distant from agriculture. Future leaders in agriculture need to be able to communicate well, both orally and in writing. This course will cover the basics of successful communication in the sciences. As part of this course, students will have the opportunity to practice oral and written communication. These skills will be practiced through the preparation of scientific articles, reports, and papers as well as the deliverance of oral presentations such as short in-person talks and recorded videos.


Topical Outline

Students completing this course will possess effectual skills in: 1. Preparation of professional scientific artifacts including but not limited to technical research reports and short scientific articles 2. Creating and delivering impactful oral presentations through both face-to-face and virtual platforms 3. Citing professional and peer-reviewed articles for use in scientific papers and presentations 4. Critically reviewing both published and non-published forms of communication
