Course Description

Issues in today's world of private and public archaeology, including legal and regulatory matters, professional standards and codes of ethics, professionalism, business models (private practice and corporate archaeology), governmental and regulatory archaeology, the RFP, and the proposal/bid process.

Course Objectives

After completing this course, students will be aware of all the issues facing a professional in archaeological resource management. They will be learn about federal and state regulations affecting archaeology; understand the RFP process; and the Code of Ethics and professional standards for this profession.


Topical Outline

1. Modern “estates’ in U.S. archaeology – private, public and academic. The changes in the 20th century in the practice of U.S. archaeology. 2. Enabling legislation history – WPA, River Basin Survey, NHPA, NEPA and “Moss-Bennett” (1974). Executive Orders and why we care about them. Section 106. 3. State programs; Federal Programs and the World, e.g., European Union. 4. The Private Sector – “CRM” – 25 years on. “Salvage Archaeology.” 5. Academic Sector archaeology – does it really matter? 6. Standards and who sets them. Registry of Professional Archaeologists (RPA). 7. The grant and contract process. What is an “RFP” and where do I get one? Grantsmanship – where the money comes from. 8. Contract management – “archaeological managers” and the business of archaeology. The hierarchy of the practice of archaeology. The “Principal Investigator.” 9. NAGPRA and its impact on American archaeology. Tribal archaeological program, e.g., Navaho-Dine. “Bones of Contention.” Reburial/repatriation. 10. Issues in underwater archaeology – the Abandoned Shipwreck Act versus treasure hunting. 11. The “Future” – technology and archaeology. 12. How is archaeology relevant to our or any society?
