Course Objectives

The goals of this course are to provide a foundation for more advanced studies in infectious diseases. Specifically, clinical presentation, disease surveillance, disease transmisson as well as the molecular and cellualr mechanisms underlying diseases caused by viral, bacterial, protozoan, and helminthic pathogens will be discussed. When completed the students should have an understanding of: (1)pathogen taxonomy, (2)basic virulence mechanisms, (3) disease presentation. (4)vaccine and therapeutic drug capabilities, (5)basic methods of disease surveillance, and (6) mechanisms of disease transmission.
