Course Description
The study of Latina lives from a feminist perspective. Examination of research and writing about the lives of Latina women with a particular focus on the dynamics of communities in the United States, immigration, cultural values regarding gender, and effects of poverty and violence.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be asked to read several additional
texts, including current statements and research on public
policy around immigration, as well as theoretical pieces that
have informed Latina and Chicana feminist understandings of
gender relationships in the Latino/a diaspora. They will be
asked to lead at least one class discussion and to present
their final papers (minimum 20 pages) to the class.

Course Objectives
Students will be expected to gain an understanding of the complex dynamics of Latino/a communities in the US and Latin America, the relationship between cultural values and gender roles in Latina lives, and the effects of US policy toward Latino/a immigrants. Should be able to articulate and explain differences within Latina lives and to produce a final paper examining one facet of contemporary or historical Latina existence.
