Course Description
Theories, research, and practice concerned with prevention,
intervention, and recovery related to dropout of gifted ethnic
minority students. Social, psychological, and cultural factors
that place gifted ethnic minority students at risk will be
addressed, as well as historical and contemporary approaches to
maximize academic performance in school and community.

- Students will understand general retention principles and frameworks.
- Students will understand the influence of social, psychological, and cultural factors on the educational experiences and perceptions of talented ethnic minorities placed at risk for dropping out.
- Students will proactively interact with talented ethnic minority youth in educational programming sponsored by schools, community, or other agencies.
- Students will examine drop-out prevention strategies used to assess and evaluate interests and needs of talented ethnic minorities placed at risk for dropping out.
- Students will analyze the roles of school personnel, community advocates, and family members in retention and drop-out prevention programs and services.
- Students will identify and use family, peer, school, community, and/or governmental agency resources to promote retention strategies.
- Students will develop gifted or advanced program retention policies and practices for a specific group of or initiative for underachieving or under-served students.
- Students will develop retention strategies to enhance personal accountability of talented ethnic minority students.
- Students will develop and execute a service-learning project with a talented ethnic minority youth or program to prevent or intervene in a future, current, or recovery drop-out situation.
