Elementary Amharic I


Course Description

Introduction to Amharic language and culture. Emphasis on the sound system, pronunciation, grammar, reading, and conversation in Amharic. Students will also be exposed to computer enhanced materials that will speed up their understanding of the writing system in the oral proficiency.

Course Objectives

By the end of the semester, students will be expected to have mastered the Amharic writing system, achieve an acceptable level of language proficiency which includes the ability to recognize specific vocabulary items and to use the vocabulary in oral and written exercises that include identify objects, master basic greetings and understand their cultural implications, write a simple paragraph in Amharic that includes greetings and introducing oneself, and to translate the same from Amharic into English.
