The literature of the world-wide dispersion of Africans and people of African descent based on selected representative works of African-American, African-Caribbean, and African literature.

Course Objectives

The course aims at giving the students an understanding and appreciation of the literature and culture of African-American, African-Caribbean and African people through the study of selected works of the most representative authors of the Black Diaspora literature. Students will be required to do research and write a documented paper on an author or period of the literature of a student’s own choice. The documented paper will comprise 60% of the final grade in the course, and will be in lieu of the final examination. In addition to the research paper, students will also a take an objective test and write a short paper in the course.


Topical Outline

The literature of the early encounter of the African people with the West; the literature of black people’s struggle against slavery, colonialism and racism; black cultural identity; black people's concerns in today's global community; the search for black literary aesthetics.
