Interactive Composition


Course Description

Electronic music composition techniques, focusing on interactive systems, live electronic music, and multimedia applications, and current trends in music utilizing interactive technologies. Semester also includes recording studio workshops.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Additional requirements for graduate students are based on added project specifications requiring more in-depth understanding of the unit topics. Project 1 (instrument building project): graduate students must also map the instrument to an external controller. Project 2 (algorithmic composition): graduate student patches must make use of FFT analysis. Project 3 (live signal processing): graduate students must use a multi-channel (quadraphonic) configuration. Graduate students are also held to higher expectations of creative scope for the final project.

Course Objectives

Become familiar with interactive technology platforms for digital audio and data processing; engage with current ways technology is being used in the field of music composition; explore applications of technology in experimental and improvised music.


Topical Outline

Interactive music in Ableton and Max; live digital signal processing; laptop ensembles; human interface devices; algorithmic composition; special topics in live video processing.
