Course Description

Introduces the field and practice of graphic design. Explores the development and creation of visual responses to communication problems. Upon completion, students have the option of applying for acceptance into the Graphic Design major.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will recognize and explore graphic design as both a creative practice and a professional field.
  • Students will articulate the fundamental principles of graphic design and recognize characteristics of effective communication design.
  • Students will identify and apply principles of visual structure and design to create basic visual communication outcomes using a variety of tools and media.
  • Students will develop and utilize foundational skills with design tools and relevant technology, understanding their role in the creative process.
  • Students will employ an iterative design process including ideation, sketching, concept generation, prototyping, and refining work based on feedback and self-assessment.
  • Students will analyze and evaluate design outcomes, including their own work and that of classmates, utilizing relevant design vocabulary to provide constructive feedback and assess impact.

Topical Outline

  • Engage in visual exercises and activities that foster experimentation, creative problem-solving, and exploratory thinking in design.
  • Create and execute design assignments that introduce the visual language of design and develop foundational skills in composition, hierarchy, color theory, spatial organization, and visual translation.
  • Begin using industry-standard design software to explore digital creation
  • Participate in group discussions to develop the ability to give and receive constructive feedback, refining design work through peer perspectives and collaboration
  • Curate and refine a portfolio of creative work, developing self-assessment skills to effectively showcase design and communication abilities.
