Intellectual and related developmental disabilities across the lifespan. Topics include historical, philosophical, and legislative foundations; definitions; assessment; demographics; diversity; school, community, and family service delivery models; transition; instructional strategies and implementation; collaboration; and professionalism and ethical practices.

Course Objectives
1. Describe and contrast current federal and Georgia definitions of Intellectual and other Developmental Disabilities (ID/DD). 2. Describe the identification criteria related to federal and state definitions, and the major issues surrounding labeling and its effects on children and families. 3. Describe the: History of services for people with ID/DD; historical perspective on definitions; historical perspective of litigation and legislation in the field; and perspectives on the definition and etiology of ID/DD. 4. Describe appropriate assessment strategies and weaknesses of current standard and non-standardized tests. 5. Describe the continuum of services and placement for individuals with ID/DD and analyze current services with respect to the construct of Least Restrictive Environment. 6. Identify factors that contribute to an overrepresentation of culturally/linguistically diverse students in special education programs. 7. Describe and analyze evidence-based practices for individuals with ID/DD including: Curricula and instructional strategies, assistive technologies. 8. Describe evidence-based practices to improve the academic, social, and career/vocational and transition skills of individuals with ID/DD.
