Introduction to biochemical engineering processes, types of process units, process flow sheets, mass and energy balance calculations, process simulation, and basics of plant design economics.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will learn basic biochemical engineering concepts.
  • Students will learn about biochemical engineering processes, including process flow sheets, process units, and their functions.
  • Students will understand the stepwise methodology to solve material balance problems.
  • Students will understand degree of freedom analysis for solving material balance problems.
  • Students will be able to solve material balance problems in biochemical engineering process for single and multiple process units.
  • Students will be able to solve energy balance problems with and without a chemical reaction.
  • Students will understand the basics of biochemical process design.
  • Students will generate process flow sheets for a given biochemical engineering design process.
  • Students will understand the importance of ethics, code, and safety in engineering design.
  • Students will learn concepts related to feasibility and economic evaluation of design.
  • Students will develop the ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering design and analysis problems.
  • Students will apply the concepts learned to design a biochemical engineering process in the course project.
