Tonal Counterpoint


Course Description

The study of counterpoint of the Baroque, with emphasis on model composition and analysis of the keyboard works of J.S. Bach.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be asked to perform to a higher standard in all aspects of the course. Graduate assignments will be longer, involve greater sophistication in understanding and skill, and will be graded more strictly. Graduate tests will contain different, more sophisticated questions. In addition, graduate students will present to the class analyses of fugues from Bachs (Well Tempered Clavier). Graduate students will also compose an additional final assignment (a four voice fugue) which will exceed the standards that the undergraduate students will be required to achieve (a three voice fugue).

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the succesful student will be able to: 1. Compose and analyze inventions and sinfonias, 2. Compose and analyze canons, 3. Compose and analyze invertible counterpoint, 4. Compose and analyze fugues in 3 or more voices.
