Islamic Arabic II


Course Description

Reading of various Qur'anic surahs (chapters) not covered in Islamic Arabic I, emphasizing Arabic pronunciation, translation, understanding meaning, learning vocabulary, recognition of grammatical features, and syntax. Supplementary related Arabic readings in the "circumstances of revelation" and Qur'anic commentary. Also, readings in hadith, narrative literature, poetry, history, Sufi literature, fiqh, and various online resources for Arabic literature.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to complete an annotated translation of an Islamic text utilizing the scholarly conventions for transliterating Arabic and the various textual resources for doing research in Arabic.

Course Objectives

Students will become proficient in: 1) reading and comprehending the Qur'an and other Arabic Islamic texts; 2) vocalizing and translating unvoweled Arabic Islamic texts; 3) writing in Arabic, implementing grammatical constructions and vocabulary used in Arabic Islamic texts; 4) computer literacy in Arabic by mastering Arabic word processing and becoming adept at searching the internet and online texts in Arabic.


Topical Outline

Weeks 1-2 Readings in Qur’anic surahs not covered in Islamic Arabic I: emphasizing Arabic pronunciation, familiarity with online dictionaries, and other resources for pronunciation, reading, translation, and Arabic word processing. Weeks 3-4 Continued readings in Qur'anic surahs, circumstances of revelation, Qur'anic commentaries, emphasizing vocabulary building, grammatical recognition, and syntax. Weeks 5-7 Readings in hadith literature Weeks 8-9 Narrative literature Weeks 10-11 Poetry Weeks 12-13 Sufi literature Week 14 Historical and biographical literature Week 15 Legal literature Week 16 Class projects demonstrating the grammar, vocabulary, understanding of a text, supplemented by student research.
