Course Description

Introductory overview of public health problems. A survey of a broad range of public health problems facing the developing world and an exploration of a variety of possible solutions. This course is uniquely suited for students interested in studying abroad or volunteering in the global community.

Course Objectives

To introduce students to the issues facing the world today which affect the health of the population. To compare and contrast risk factors and disease rates between populations. To develop a basic understanding of the core functions of public health. To appreciate environmental as well as behavioral factors associated with disease prevention and health. To understand the evolution of public health practice in another country and the many diverse factors influencing the health of its population. To get students to think critically about public health issues, analyze complex situations, and appreciate the challenges facing the public health system of the world today.

Overview of public health systems and problems that face the world; Introduction to basic principles of epidemiology; Overview of morbidity and mortality rates and how they vary around the world; Public health organization and function and how they vary around the world; Global environmental Health Issues; Challenges of disease prevention and health promotion and how they vary around the world.
