Course Description

Developing professional skills and forming strategies for careers in biomedical research, medicine, or other health-related fields. Creating resumes, writing and editing personal statements, and building the necessary skillset to gain entrance to graduate, medical, and other professional schools and for long-term success.

Course Objectives

Identify and communicate professional goals. Gain an understanding of, and be able to recognize, professionalism and etiquette. Create professional documents such as resume and LinkedIn or a similar page. Develop communication skills via personal statement and practicing interviewing techniques. Understand and develop core competencies needed to gain entrance to medical or other programs, and ultimately, thrive in that career path. Learn about key services available on the UGA campus, including the UGA Career Center and Libraries.

Developing Professional Goals Professionalism Resumes and Online Presence Writing a Personal Statement Interviewing for Medical School or Other Program Core Competencies, as defined by the American Association of Medical Colleges: (I) Pre-Professional Competencies – Service Orientation, Social Skills, Cultural Competence, Teamwork, Oral Communication, Ethical Responsibility, Reliability and Dependability, Resilience and Adaptability, and Capacity for Improvement; (II) Thinking and Reasoning Competencies – Critical Thinking, Quantitative Reasoning, Scientific Inquiry, and Written Communication; and (III) Science Competencies – Living Systems and Human Behavior.
