Musical styles and genres from the 16th century through Bach and Handel.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be expected to write a paper on topics of wider scope than undergraduates and will present oral reports.

Course Objectives

Upon completion the successful student will: - learn necessary background for informed performance and interpretation of Baroque music; - increase their aural and conceptual knowledge of Baroque masterworks; - understand the relationship between composer and performer in Baroque vocal and instrumental music.


Topical Outline

Topics of study include: 16th-century sacred music; 16th-century secular song; 16th-century instrumental genres; Opera, oratorio, and cantata; Baroque instrumental genres.
