Chamber, orchestral, keyboard, and operatic works from the middle and late eighteenth century.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be expected to write a paper on topics of wider scope than undergraduates and will present oral reports.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the successful student will be able to: 1) perform in a historically informed manner; 2) apply knowledge of genre and form conventions to individual masterworks; 3) understand Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven in their historical context; 4) recognize salient traits of the Classical style and of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven.

Main topics for this course: roots of the Classical style; 18th-c opera; evolution of sonata form; Classical orchestra; aesthetics; Haydn; Mozart; Beethoven; the rediscovery of Bach.
