Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the successful student will be able to: 1) interpret 19th-c music in a historically informed manner; 2) understand the interrelationships of music and the other arts; 3) recognize and articulate the characteristics responsible for individual compositional styles.

Main topics for this course: Beethoven1s styles and legacy; roots of Romanticism; Schubert and lyricism; Rossini and virtuosity; Romantic instrumental music; the national styles of Romantic opera; symphony after Beethoven; nationalism; Late Romanticism.
