Course Description

Course will cover fundamentals of biomarkers and their intended application in epidemiology, toxicology, and other health disciplines. Topics include basic concepts of biomarkers, how biomarkers are developed, validated, and measured, their strengths and weaknesses, and how molecular epidemiology was developed.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to apply the basic tenets of molecular biomarkers, including concepts, types of biomarkers, development, validation, and application of biomarkers.
  • Students will be able to discuss: a. Basic principles of biomarker development, validation, and application for environmental causes of chronic diseases induced by biological, physical, chemical, and life-style risk factors b. Relate the interactions of gene and environment impacts on biomarker studies c. Genetic predispositions and genetic susceptibility in biomarker studies
  • Students will be able to analyze current strategies in application of biomarkers in cancer etiology and prevention, including primary prevention, secondary prevention, chemoprevention, and tertiary prevention.
