Course Description
Microscopic studies will be made of poultry and gamebird tissues to examine the effects of specific diseases and their processes. Interpretation and application of histopathology in disease diagnosis and confirmation will be emphasized.

Course Objectives
The student will understand and recognize the responses of avian tissues to injury. Given stained slides of avian tissues or images derived thereof, the student will: 1. Identify tissues and reactions present. 2. Identify additional organs to submit for microscopic examination. 3. Understand common pathology terminology for severity and duration of lesions. 4. Recognize major microscopic lesions. 5. Recognize parasites, viral inclusions, pigments, bacteria, and fungi if present. 6. Identify methods needed to confirm the cause of the lesions observed. 7. Identify the specific cause for the lesions present or construct a list of most likely causes in order of likelihood. 8. List the steps needed to collect and preserve avian tissue samples for submission to a diagnostic laboratory.
Topical Outline
This course teaches the fundamentals of poultry and gamebird histology and histopathology. Topics include the microscopic diagnosis of infectious, metabolic, degenerative and toxic diseases of birds. 1. Normal histology and tissue processing 2.
