Elementary Bengali II


Course Description

Continuation of Elementary Bengali I, emphasizing oral fluency, written expression, and reading comprehension. Taught by the use of vocabulary in simulated settings through repetition drills, frequent use of vocabulary, acting, and reading aloud. Augmented by reading and grammatical analysis of texts.

Course Objectives

This course is a continuation of Elementary Bengali I, designed as a comprehensive approach to learning Bengali focusing on speaking, listening, reading, and writing. By the end of this course, students will be able to converse in everyday social situations, read texts of elementary II level difficulty, write elementary II narrative style paragraphs, and develop a cultural awareness.

Topics: Week 1-2: Dialogue: Arranging a Visit: Telephone Conversation Grammar and Expressions: appointments, future tense, infinitive, object case, impersonal constructions Week 3-4: Dialogue Health and Diet Grammar and Expressions: Telling time, obligation, impersonal constructions (2), imperative, negative past Week 5-6: Dialogue: Meeting an Artist Grammar and Expressions: Past participle, connecting sentences, compound verbs, double postpositions, perfect tense Week 7-8: Dialogue: Talking to a Child Grammar and Expressions: Present continuous tense, comparisons, like/dislike Week 9-10: Dialogue: Conversation on a Train Grammar and Expressions: Past perfect tense, verbal noun + deoya/neoya, adjectival postpositions; case endings for words ending in conjunctions, Week 11-12: Dialogue: Telling Stories Grammar and Expressions: Simple past tense, verbal noun as an adjective (passive sentences), which/any, compound verbs with deoya/neoya Week 12-13: Dialogue: Meeting a Writer Grammar and Expressions: Conditional participle, habitual past tense, need. Week 14-15: Dialogue: Learning Bengali Grammar and Expressions: Past continuous tense, extended verbs, conditions and conditional sentences Week 16 Review and final exam
