Course Description
Study of Urdu texts with emphasis upon extensive reading and individual and/or group research projects.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to do scholarly annotated
translations involving research in additional primary and
secondary texts as well as to critique each other's translations
and periodically meet with the other graduate students and the
professor.

Course Objectives
The course will provide students with the opportunity for advanced study of Urdu. It will prepare undergraduates and graduate students for doing independent research in Urdu and graduate students for utilizing primary sources needed for Master's Thesis preparation in Islamic Studies.
Topical Outline
Topics will vary by semester and will include the following: specific Urdu authors (such as Ghalib), selections of Islamic literature in Urdu, Urdu poetry, the Urdu novel, modern Urdu political writings.
