Course Description
Study of Persian texts with emphasis on extensive reading and individual and/or group research projects.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
A scholarly research paper focusing on one or more texts in
Persian and utilizing the graduate student's own disciplinary
methods including, but not limited to, religious studies,
history, comparative literature, psychology, philosophy, and
political science. This must include a survey of relevant
secondary literature accomplished by means of Index Islamicus
and other indexes of periodical literature.

Course Objectives
The course will provide students with the opportunity for advanced study of Persian texts. In addition, it will prepare all students for doing independent research in Persian and graduate students for utilizing primary and secondary sources especially needed for thesis or dissertation preparation and for scholarly work as a whole.
Topical Outline
Topics will vary by semester and will include the following: masterpieces of Persian prose and poetry (by authors such as Rumi, and Hafez), mystical literature, historical texts, Qur'anic commentary and hadith literature, modern Persian literature.
