Advanced Evaluation Methods in Learning, Design, and Technology


Course Description

Planning, conducting, analyzing, and reporting systematic formative and summative evaluations. Students will apply a systems thinking approach to evaluation across K-12, higher education, and industry.

  • Articulate and defend a definition of product evaluation.
  • Contrast the objectives and methodologies of formative and summative product evaluation, emphasizing their relevance in the design of learning experiences.
  • Distinguish between/among the following as they related to instructional products: (a) measurement and evaluation; (b) input, context, process, and product criteria; (c) extrinsic and intrinsic evaluation; (d) norm-reference and criterion- referenced measurement; and (e) learner verification.
  • Write effective assessment items and test their validity and reliability.
  • Describe sources, applications, advantages, and limitations of at least six alternative evaluation models as they relate to instructional products.
  • Describe rationale, methods, and instrumentation for four facets of evaluation with the context of instructional product evaluation, specifically documentation, formative evaluation, assessment of immediate effectiveness, and impact evaluation.
  • Evaluate a real-world training program by gathering data using the assessment items generated in the evaluation plan.
  • Synthesize and present actionable recommendations for the training program, grounded in data-driven insights from the evaluation process.
