Elementary Italian


Course Description

A continuation of Elementary Italian. Open only to students who took Elementary Italian or who have an appropriate placement score. Emphasis is on conversational skills with attention to reading, writing, and listening comprehension. Fundamentals of Italian pronunciation and grammar; study of Italian culture. Work in the language laboratory.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will express ideas in written/oral form using target language with increased clarity and attention to detail.
  • Students will formulate more complex constructions in the target language in a wider range of temporal contexts (present, past, and future).
  • Students will navigate interpersonal communication with respect, maturity, and/or awareness of cultural differences .
  • Students will examine stereotypical aspects of culture and question whether they apply to a people as a whole or if there are other contrasting points of view.
  • Students will engage in group discussion about course materials and compare/contrast their own lived experiences.

Topical Outline

  • Functions: talking about the past, present, and future; influencing others; agreeing and disagreeing; describing and explaining; expressing courtesy and respect; expressing emotional involvement; giving commands; expressing wishes; making requests and recommendations; advising; talking about what you would do/should have done; ordering and making polite requests.
  • Topics and Vocabulary: parts of the body, physical health, places, stores, geographical features; professions; social life; advice, money; travel; restaurants; hotels; relationships; pastimes.
  • Grammar: future, present perfect vs. imperfect; commands; conditional; subjunctive; comparatives and superlatives.
  • Pronunciation: attention will be given to vowels, consonants, stress, and intonation throughout the course.
  • Culture: cultural material on customs, geography, history, literature, art, and politics of Italy.
