Course Description
Examination of how critical teachers in elementary, secondary, and post-secondary schools, including teacher education programs, confront systems of oppression and teach for social justice. Exploration of sociopolitical contexts and sociohistorical roots of critical pedagogies. Development and critique of critical pedagogy in preK-12, university classrooms, and community organizations.

Course Objectives
Students will: 1. explore the multiple histories and iterations of critical pedagogies in relation to ideals of democracy, social justice, and educational equity 2. examine issues of political clarity in the literature and their own teaching 3. explore the relation between sociopolitical context in schools and society 4. engage in critical dialogue about issues of race, gender, social class, sexual orientation, language and power 5. develop, implement, and critique critical pedagogy in a classroom or community setting
