Course Description
Examination of a number of often controversial issues that surround the writing, publication, and teaching of literature for young people. The issues are examined through intensive reading of research and popular literature on the subjects, as well as by reading the works that illustrate the various issues.

Course Objectives
Students will: 1. develop an understanding of crucial issues related to the writing, publication and teaching of literature for young people. 2. become familiar with the theoretical, empirical research and popular literature related to these issues. 3. have the opportunity to read, write about and discuss some of the fiction and nonfiction that relates to the issues under discussion. 4. undertake an independent research project about one of the issues covered in class, or their own choosing.
