Theoretical Stances on Literacy


Course Description

Exploration of theoretical and philosophical stances that influence literacy and literacy education. This course is not a survey course; instead, at the discretion of the instructor, each iteration of this course will focus on the work of one theorist or school of theory (e.g., Derrida, Bakhtin, Reader Response).

Course Objectives

Students will: 1. Gain a richer and deeper understanding of influential theorists or literacy 2. Express and discuss key components of the designated theory of study 3. Apply those theories to literacy pedagogy, professional learning, policy, and research 4. Construct theoretical frameworks and arguments 5. Synthesize these understandings into a new pedagogy, professional learning, policy and research 6. Increase ability to read dense and convoluted academic text


Topical Outline

The topical outline would differ depending upon which theorist or theoretical stance was chosen to be studied. One would expect that any such course would cover major works by the theorist or school of theory, critique of such work, and applications of this work in education.
