This is an online distance learning course intended to educate veterinarians on the pathology associated with viral, bacterial, parasitic, and toxicologic diseases of poultry.

Non-Traditional Format
The students will be reading online lectures in text, powerpoint presentations with written or audio explanation, or there will be voice recorded or video recorded lectures. They will then have assigned readings and discussion boards with other students in the class. The students will have to have internet access.

Course Objectives
The objective of the course is for students to develop a systematic approach to performing poultry disease investigations, differentiate pathologic lesions from normal tissue, and development of abilities to systematically construct differential diagnoses for resolving poultry viral, bacterial, parasitic, and toxicologic disease problems. At the conclusion of the course, veterinarians are expected to be proficient in differentiating the pathology associated with infectious and toxicologic diseases of poultry and apply this knowledge to disease diagnosis and management of commercial poultry populations.

Pathology associated with viral diseases: Newcastle Disease, Avian Influenza, Infectious Bronchitis Virus, Infectious Bursal Disease Virus, Avian Reovirus, Turkey Coronavirus, and others. 1. Introductory information about the significant viral diseases of poultry 2. Effects of these viruses on the tissue structure and resulting pathology of infection 3. Samples to collect for diagnostic pathology Pathology associated with bacterial diseases: Fowl Cholera, Erysipelas, Pullorum, E. coli, Airsacculitis, and others 1. Introductory information regarding significant poultry bacterial pathogens 2. Effects of these bacteria on tissue structure and resulting pathology of infection 3. Samples to collect for diagnostic pathology Pathology associated with parasites and toxins: Eimeria sp., Helminths, Aspergillosis, Mycotoxins, and Environmental toxins 1.
