Intermediate Indonesian I


Course Description

Continuation of Elementary Indonesian I and II. Oral fluency and development of writing and reading skills in Indonesian. Taught by the use of vocabulary in simulated settings through repetition drills, frequent use of vocabulary, acting, and reading aloud. Augmented by reading, translation, and discussion of Indonesian texts.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course students are expected to be able to: • read and analyze various reading materials such as stories, advertisements, brochures, news articles, cartoons, letters, and blogs; • produce a variety of writings such as persuasion, narrative, and expository using the correct grammar and the proper diction; • participate in effective oral interaction such as discussion and debate; • listen to and view various forms of media in order to gather and share information, persuade others, and express ideas.

Week 1 Review time, frequency, group classifier, comparisons, directions, making reports Week 2 Review ‘ber-‘ and ‘me-‘ prefix, health, topic-comment sentences, past tense, future tense, affixation ke-an Week 3 Understand Indonesia’s geography and weather; related reading material about Indonesia’s “BMG”, a map, characteristics of Sumatra island (pictures provided by the cultural affair department) Week 4 Characteristics of Java island (pictures provided by the cultural affairs department), drawing comparisons, grammar ‘makin lama makin…’ Week 5 Characteristics of Kalimantan island (pictures provided by the cultural affair department), inquiring about and indicating location, in general and in particular Week 6 Characteristics of Bali island; tourism articles, brochures, advertisement Week 7 Characteristics of Sulawesi; grammar suffix ‘-an’ Week 8 Characteristics of Papua; politic articles about issues in Papua, discussion Week 9 Traditional music; names of some of the traditional music, listen to the music, watching the traditional art perform and the more modern one performed by Djaduk Ferianto (on-line), giving opinion Week 10 Object-focus sentences, affixation, and analyze them in the reading texts Week 11 Modern music; introduce different kinds of music and the singers (e.g. Dangdut by Rhoma Irama, pop by Krisdayanti, rock by Jamrud, jazz by Andien, orchestra by Addie MS, etc), read a happening music trend/singer article/profile.
