Intermediate Indonesian II


Course Description

Continuation of Intermediate Indonesian I. Oral fluency and development of writing and reading skills in Indonesian. Taught by vocabulary use in simulated settings through repetition drills, frequent vocabulary use, acting, and reading aloud. Augmented by reading, translation, and discussion of Indonesian texts drawn from news articles and Indonesian literature.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course students are expected to be able to • read and analyze various reading materials such as stories,advertisements, brochures, news articles, cartoons, letters, and blogs; • produce persuasive, narrative, and expository writing styles using correct grammar and proper diction; • participate in effective oral interaction in discussion and debate; • listen to and view various forms of media in order to gather and share information, persuade others, and express ideas.


Topical Outline

Week 1 Review 1001 and 1002 Week 2 Review 2003 Week 3 Reading and writing formal invitations, learning what to say on special occasions (role play can support this topic). Week 4 Understand the procedures at an Indonesian wedding, quote somebody in direct and indirect speech. Week 5 Understand the importance of two big ceremonies in Indonesia: Lebaran and Natal; describe the tradition of Christmas, use reduplicated adjectives with ‘se-nya’ affixation. Week 6 Understand the significance of the Sekaten festival in Yogyakarta. Form and use nouns formed with ‘pe-an’ affixation. Week 7 Understand the practices of celebrating the Balinese new year, Nyepi. Recognize and use nouns with suffixes: ‘-man’, ‘-wan’, and ‘-wati’. Week 8 Understand the importance of Balinese cremation ceremony and practices associated with it; analyze the same tradition in Chinese culture (can be done on discussion or writing assignment). Week 9 Understand environmental challenges in general and in the Indonesian context in particular and discuss their causes. Week 10 Understand the work done by orangutan rehabilitation centers in Sumatra and Kalimantan, emphasize different objects by use of the phrase ‘bukan hanya…. Melainkan juga…’ Week 11 Understand the practical measures which can be taken to help protect the environment, use nouns formed with ‘pe-an’ affixation. Week 12 Understand the different forms of pollution, discuss the causes and reasons why things happen. Week 13 Understand the use of heroes’ names for naming streets, universities and other institutions, employ the various forms of reduplication. Week 14 Understand the early kingdom and some heroes of Indonesia, sentences commencing with verbs. Week 15 Understand the proclamation of independence and the struggle for independence, discuss the presidents of the Republic of Indonesia. Week 16 Review
