Course Description
Teaching children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Examination of research-based strategies that address the educational needs of children with ASD, development of appropriate assessment and intervention strategies, and classroom observations.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will complete all requirements expected of
undergraduates and will also complete a comprehensive review of
professional peer-reviewed literature on a topic related
to Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of Instructing Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, the learner will be able to: 1. Observe a student and identify information which is and is not characteristic of ASD. 2. Explain differences between students who have ASD and students with intellectual disabilities and emotional behavior disorders. 3. Explain the differences between Asperger Syndrome and classic autism. 4. Discuss why the incidence of ASD appears to be rising. 5. Describe an appropriate physical learning environment for a student with autism. 6. Describe organizational strategies for students with ASD. 7. Give examples of the functions of inappropriate and/or unusual autistic behaviors. 8. Describe ABA instructional strategies appropriate for children with ASD. 9. Describe and conduct functional behavior assessments (FBA) that result in the design of positive behavior interventions strategies for dealing with aberrant behavior. 10. Critique common interventions associated with children with ASD based on the most current research.
