Critical Thinking

Course Description

Economics of health, health care, and health policy. Application of microeconomic principles to the study of individual health production and the market for health insurance, the analysis of the health-care industry, and the evaluation of health policy.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Students are expected to achieve standards of scholarship consistent with study at the master's level. Such students will be expected to read more extensively and integrate materials more thoroughly and will be graded with higher standards and expectations. Examples include additional readings summarized in a written report, a careful review of primary research with an application to a relevant topic, or other projects that apply knowledge gained to specific problems.

  • Students will be able to explain the economics of individual health production and demand by considering the credibility of various research designs that provide empirical evidence on questions in health economics.
  • Students will be able to analyze the market for health care, discuss future directions for health care reform, and understand the arguments for and against various policy proposals.
  • Students will be able to understand the economics of health insurance.
  • Students will be able to evaluate government regulation of health care.
  • Students will be able to apply microeconomic principles to assess public health problems, policies, and proposed reforms.
