Most common drug interactions and adverse drug reactions with an emphasis on detection, prevention, and management.

Non-Traditional Format

Instead of having two lecture-hours per week for 15 weeks, this course will be offered as 3 lecture-hours per week for 10 weeks for a total of 30 contact hours (i.e., 2 credit hours).

Course Objectives

1. Discuss the characteristics of drug-drug, drug-food, drug- lab, and drug-disease interactions for commonly prescribed drugs. 2. Discuss the impact of individual patient characteristics on common types of drug-drug, drug-food, drug-lab, and drug- disease interactions. 3. Formulate an appropriate action plan when a drug order or prescription presents a potential drug-related problem (e.g., drug interaction). 4. Differentiate between side effect and adverse drug reactions. 5. Describe cutaneous and systemic manifestations of adverse drug reactions for commonly prescribed drugs. 6. Formulate an appropriate action plan to manage an adverse drug reaction.
