The history and philosophy of systems engineering, the guiding
principles and steps of the "systems engineering approach" used
in problem solving, and an introduction to the basic tools used
in systems engineering analysis, project planning, and
management.

- Students will demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the origins, concepts, and definition of systems engineering.
- Students will demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the major phases of systems engineering (such as integration, functional analysis, requirement development, optimization, design, life cycle).
- Students will demonstrate an understanding of how measures of effectiveness can be used in evaluating alternative system designs with respect to system requirements and specifications.
- Students will demonstrate an understanding of the need for models for economic evaluation of systems.
