Internship in Teaching and Pedagogy


Course Description

An internship in teaching literature and/or writing at either the college or secondary level, with departmental approval, under the direction of a faculty member or the Undergraduate English Program Office and onsite internship adviser. Internship work may include developing curriculum, lecturing, conducting discussion, tutoring students, and helping to assess student work. The internship will culminate in a final academic project.

Non-Traditional Format

Students receiving one credit hour will work six to ten hours a week in a college or secondary school teaching situation and will turn in a weekly teaching journal and a set of lesson plans based on the teaching experience.

Course Objectives

Students will gain experience in the teaching of literature and/or writing and in developing literary and composition curriculum.

Topics may include: Understanding and applying learning outcomes and standards Developing lesson plans for the literature or composition classroom The art of lecture and discussion Developing tests and writing assignments Peer review and group work Media in the classroom Assessing student work and classroom goals
