Course Description
Practicum experience in public health practice through placement in appropriate public health related agencies. The residency student will apply knowledge, skills, and abilities gained in prerequisite course work to professional practice.

Doctoral-level field practice experience in public health. Required of all students completing the Doctor of Public Health degree. Supervised by the director of the DrPH program with day-to-day supervision by the designated representative of the host organization.

Course Objectives
• Examine the structure and functions of the participating agency. • Examine the public health impact of the agency’s activities. • Function effectively in a work environment with existing staff members and administrators. • Improve skills in long-range planning, including the areas of needs assessment, funding, and budgeting. • Apply research and data gathering techniques. • Describe the agency’s administrative processes, including internal and external funding sources and management issues. • Develop and refine communication skills through direct participation and contact with agency staff and clients. • Utilize technology as needed to produce work products. • Articulate concepts of health and public health and convey their value and importance to clients and the public. • Demonstrate leadership in public health practice.
Topical Outline
Assess individual, environmental and/or community needs for public health. Test, plan, implement and/or administer public health programs. Evaluate effectiveness of public health programs. Coordinate provision of public health services. Act as a resource person in public health. Communicate public health needs, concerns, and resources. Apply appropriate research principles and methods in public health. Advance the profession of public health.
