Students will apply health promotion skills in community health settings through participation in a collaborative health promotion project.

Non-Traditional Format
Course includes a service-learning project during the semester that either employs skills or knowledge learned in the course or teaches new skills or knowledge related to course objectives. The course uses service-learning as the primary pedagogical tool for teaching course objectives. Students will work on a comprehensive project(s) and may be required to spend considerable time outside the classroom. Students will be engaged in the service-learning component for approximately 75- 100% of overall instructional time.

Course Objectives
At the end of the service-learning experience, students will have: 1. applied health promotion practices in an actual community health setting. 2. demonstrated competence in planning health promotion programs. 3. knowledge of community assessment.

Class meetings: variable number -orientation to community -examination of the health promotion issue -planning of the service-learning project, including timeline, budget, implementing strategy, and evaluation plan -organization of the resources to complete the service- learning project -discussion of the service-learning experience Community health site work: variable hours -implementation of the program -network with community partners -coordinate community health organization's service-learning effort
