Georgia Coastal Field Studies


Course Description

Provides students with an overview of historic preservation, focusing on three aspects of the field: documentation, conservation, and interpretation. Lectures convey background information. Field work in documentation and conservation is performed at the primary coastal site. Tours of important historic sites in the region examine interpretation.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will do an additional reading, research project, and short class presentation.

Course Objectives

Objectives: To introduce students to basic principles of historic preservation To foster an appreciation of a unique natural and cultural environment, i.e., the Georgia coast To learn how this environment can be protected and interpreted Skills: Basic principles of site mapping Basic skills of conservation, including carpentry repair Preparation and painting of wood, epoxy, and repointing of masonry Knowledge: Principles of historic preservation Cultural history of the Georgia coast Approaches to site interpretation Values: To impart an attitude of protection and stewardship of natural and cultural resources and an appreciation of the cultural diversity of peoples present and past.


Topical Outline

Maymester Preservation Field School to the Georgia Coast Day 1 Lecture in class: Background to preservation. 2 Field trip to Shields-Etheridge Farm. 3 Field trip to UGA Chapel, Boulevard Historic District, and BottleWorks. 4 Lecture in class: Background to the Georgia coast. 5 Travel to coast. 6 Introduction to Hofwyl-Broadfield. Sometime in the first two days we’ll have afternoon field trips to Butler’s Island (open all the time with walking trails) and Darien (walk around town), both a quick drive from H-B. 7 Work at H-B. 8 Work at H-B with afternoon to Fort Frederica (a quick drive). 9 Jekyll Island. 10 Work at H-B. 11 Work at H-B. 12 Sapelo Island. 13 Cumberland Island. 14 Work at H-B. 15 Work at H-B. 16 Return to Athens (possibly stop at Seabrook Village). 17 Back in Athens – Summary, preparation and presentations.
