CAD 2-D, Drafting for Stage and Production Design


Course Description

Methods for 2-D (print) communication of 3-D design using entertainment industry graphic standards, orthographic projection, ground plans, elevations, and lighting plots. Students use a free student version of Vectorworks™ software running on the students’ own laptops.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will, in addition, complete a third project, reproducing four plates of CAD plans created by a contemporary professional designer for a realized stage, television, or film project.

Course Objectives

1. Students will learn how to communicate scenic design for stage (and film or TV) in the form of 2-D drafting plates intended for directors, fabrication shops, and other production areas. 2. Students will learn entertainment industry graphic standards for design elevations. 3. Students will learn how to use the 2-D components of Vectorworks™ CAD software. 4. Students will complete a portfolio-quality set of drafting plates for a theoretical stage design and lighting design.
