Course Description
An introduction to the most basic elements of management and production for theatre and other live performance: elements of technical production, lighting, sound, painting, vertical and load bearing scenery, and rigging. Standard theatre organizational structure, terms, scheduling, unions, stage management, and technical coordination.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students:
1) will produce advanced additional technical projects and
topics to include development and submission of shop orders,
load calculation/physics of rigging, budgeting documentation
and production management.
2) will research and report on union management rules and
regulations (USA, Equity, and IATSE).
3) are expected to perform at much higher levels than
undergraduates on those topics that are common.

Course Objectives
To introduce the student to the primary tools, materials, and practices of production for theatre and live performance. Specific objectives include: 1. Gaining an appreciation and understanding of the multiple elements of production support for a theatre or live performance. 2. Expose students to the scheduling and coordination of production elements for a theatre performance. 3. Introduce students to the basic concepts of some production elements, scenery, lighting, sound, painting, and performance crew. 4. Give students practical experience with construction and lighting equipment, plans, and other production tools. 5. Give students experience scheduling and organizing their own paper production. 6. Develop in the students an awareness of the production arcs, goals, motivations, and needs of the various artist and craftsmen involved in a production. 7. Introduce students to the basic concepts of stage management.
