Course Description
Interpreting flat two-dimensional designs into actualized three- dimensional hat construction for use in costumes and prop manufacture. Students must have basic hand sewing and machine sewing skills before taking this course.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students:
1) will research and construct a mask based on a specific
cultural/historical form of theatre where masks formed an
integral part of the performance aesthetic (in addition to the
first mask project)
2) will research and produce a Buckram project expanding on the
detailing of specific period/cultural elements in the design
3) Graduate level achievement in this class will be expected by
performing at an advanced level and by complexity of subject
matter
and execution of assignments

Course Objectives
To provide the student with the ability to interpret flat 2D designs into 3D hat and mask construction for use in costumes and prop manufacture. Included in this process: blocked wool-felt sculpting, buckram wire framed millinery, various hat trimming techniques. These skills will segue into the topic of 3D soft sculpture foam mask making for animal or character type heads.
Topical Outline
A. 3D patterning using paper/board mock ups B. Sculpting shapes C. Blocking of felt and buckram D. Inner construction: wiring, mulling E. Trimming techniques and stitches/ feather work F. Safety with materials G. Introduction to various forms of foam H. Foam into 3D shapes I. Covered foam additions with character Format: The classes will consist of lectures and demonstrations as well as
laboratory time working on projects. Students will also put together a documentation book: (1” to 1 1/2” three ring binder) that should include: • Technical and material information handouts
 • Notes from class
 • Research for hat projects and materials
 • Samples from class--buckram, wire, sizing, stitches, etc.
 • Project progression journal and in-process photos for the Buckram Hat • Bibliography
