Stage and Screen Fabric Modification


Course Description

Introduction into various forms of fabric manipulation used in costume and scenic design areas of the entertainment industry, including dye, fabric painting, silk screening, block printing, and various forms of pleating.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students: 1) will research and produce a pleating and dyeing project building from the coursework 2) will research and create/demonstrate an advanced fabric modification technique beyond the topics introduced through the syllabus (e.g., batique, fabric painting, methods of fabric distressing, etc.) 3) Graduate level achievement in this class will be expected by performing at an advanced level and by complexity of subject matter and execution of assignments

Course Objectives

To provide the student with an introduction into various forms of fabric manipulation, including Dyeing and Painting, Silk-screening, Block Printing, and Various forms of Pleating (primitive, Shibori) used in Costume and Scenic design areas of the entertainment industry.

A. Fabric as canvas, exploring various surfaces and fibers B. Paints vs. dyes C. Fabric Painting techiniques: inspiration to actuality D. Block printing E. Silkscreening step by step F. Primitive pleating G. Shibori pleating H. Adding dye to the pleating process Schedule: Week 1: Introduction to basic materials and safety equipment, discussion of projects and start of research, order fabrics Week 2: Fabric Painting design due, silk painting demonstration, dye mixing, dye paste, resist, and negative space Week 3: In-studio work, progress critique Week 4: Progress critique Week 5: Fabric painting project due, block printing, intro to silk screening process Week 6: Silk screening design due, screen positive and negative Week 7: In-studio work, progress critique Week 8: Silk screen project due Week 9 : Pleating introduction, primitive pleating sample Week 10: Introduction to Shibori, build barrels, start stitching Week 11: In-studio work, progress critique Week 12: Shibori project due, start final project combining techniques Week 13: Experimentation work adding fabric paints, Kava resist Week 14: Additional studio work Week 15: Final projects due and final critiques of projects
