Course Objectives
Basic overview of knowledge of assigned subjects; critical review of assigned articles; acquaintance with the diversity of neurosurgery literature; ability to discuss concepts and make deductions; ability to understand the surgical approaches to the nervous system; ability to perform the standard neurosurgical procedures. This course will cover topics deemed essential for Board Certification in Veterinary Neurology and Veterinary Surgery.
Topical Outline
Neurosurgery topics are generated by neurology faculty and are those deemed essential to preparation for Board Certification and practice of Veterinary Neurology. Topics rotate on a regular basis and are evaluated and revised each semester for continued relevance to modern clinical neurology. The journal club will review the practical aspects, indications, and complications of the individual surgeries which will then be performed in the lab on cadaver dogs (no live animals will be used). These topics will be of advantage to both neurology and surgery residents at the CVM. The topics will include but will not be limited to: Cervical disc surgery Thoracolumbar disc surgery Lumbosacral disc surgery Chiari surgery Ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery Skull surgeries (frontal, occipital and rostrotentorial approaches) Vertebral fracture surgery AA surgery Wobbler surgery Brachial plexus surgery
