Topics specifically chosen to meet the needs of the student of economics: the definite integral, functions of several variables, partial derivatives, Lagrange multipliers, and matrices.

Course Objectives

This is a special calculus course with special emphasis on economics applications of calculus. Students should learn the definite integral, functions of several variables, and matrices. They are expected to solve maximum and minimum problems using partial derivatives and the method of Lagrange multipliers.


Topical Outline

1. Brief review of differentiation, antiderivatives. 2. Separable differential equations, integration techniques. 3. The definite integral, Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, calculation of areas, Consumer’s and Producer’s Surplus. 4. Partial differentiation and applications to optimization problems, Lagrange multipliers. 5. Matrix algebra and applications.
