Exploring foundations and programming for infants, toddlers, and young children with developmental delays, including developmentally appropriate practice, activity-based instruction, and other naturalistic evidence-based instructional practices.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • This course is designed for undergraduate students in the Birth through Age 5 Teacher Certification program.
  • Upon completion of this course, students will understand foundations and policy for early intervention and preschool special education.
  • Upon completion of this course, students will identify components of appropriate and effective individualized intervention for young children with disabilities (e.g., evidence-based practice).
  • Upon completion of this course, students will identify program models in Birth through 5, including service delivery and methods for team collaboration.
  • Upon completion of this course, students will identify the interface between developmentally appropriate practices (NAEYC) and best practices as they relate to young children with disabilities.
  • Upon completion of this course, students will discuss the rationale for family-focused, culturally sensitive intervention, including IFSP/IEP development.
  • Upon completion of this course, students will plan for instruction across developmental domains using an activity-based approach.
  • Upon completion of this course, students will use naturalistic teaching techniques with young children with disabilities to facilitate integrated growth and learning in all developmental domains.
  • Upon completion of this course, students will identify methods to facilitate interaction between children with and without disabilities.
  • Upon completion of this course, students will design appropriate social and physical learning environments.
  • Upon completion of this course, students will plan for transitions from Part C to Part B programs, and from preschool to kindergarten.
