Developmentally Appropriate Curricula for Children Aged 3-5


Course Description

This course addresses developmentally appropriate practices for children ages 3-5 years who are typically and atypically developing, including relevant theories of early learning, play, preschool curricula, emergent literacy and numeracy, social and emotional development, and classroom design.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to complete an additional assignment. Example assignments are an article summary or presentation (individual or group) on a topic relevant to course content.

  • Upon completion of this course, students will be able to critique models, theories, philosophies, and trends of early childhood education/special education.
  • Upon completion of this course, students will be able to describe the impact of language on all areas of development, including behavior and utilize strategies to support the language development of young children.
  • Upon completion of this course, students will be able to utilize resources (including GELDS) and academic content knowledge to create developmentally appropriate lesson plans across disciplines for typically and atypically developing children.
  • Upon completion of this course, students will be able to develop and create lesson plans to support learning for children experiencing a variety of needs and abilities.
  • Upon completion of this course, students will be able to describe characteristics of a learning environment that creates a supportive social-emotional environment for young children and strategies to supportive effective behavior management in the classroom.
  • Upon completion of this course, students will be able to collaborate and partner with peers to promote professional growth and development of educational philosophies and teaching abilities.
