The development of Latin poetry from the earliest examples through the fourth century CE. Epic, lyric poetry, elegy, tragedy, comedy, satire, epigram, and didactic poetry will be read and discussed. This is a translation course from Latin to English.

Students will acquire an overview of the development of Latin poetry from its beginnings to the fourth century CE.
Students will acquire familiarity with a broad range of uses for poetry, in accordance with the topical outline below.
Students will improve their technical understanding of, and ability to translate, Latin from various genres and historical periods.
Students will increase their familiarity with the conventions of classical studies and improve their research skills.
