Our sun and other stars, their physical properties and evolution. Interstellar matter and star formation. The origin and evolution of our galaxy, other galaxies, quasars, and the Universe. This course is for intended physics and astronomy majors.

  • Students will have an appreciation of the variety of astronomical objects in the Universe outside the solar system, and for the physical processes behind their creation and evolution.

  • The Sun.
  • Stars and stellar evolution.
  • Clusters of stars, the Milky Way galaxy and other galaxies.
  • Structure and origin of the Universe.
  • A typical text might be Bennett, et al. "Cosmic Perspective: Stars, Galaxies and Cosmology, 6th ed."
