Course Description
Basic principles and methods of brass instrument performance and pedagogy.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to write a research paper
and present a research project on their findings. This project
should provide specific information pertaining to pedagogical
approaches related to the teaching and learning of public
school students that are being discussed in the course.

Course Objectives
The successful student will: • demonstrate familiarity with the problems that are inherent with the playing of the brass instruments. • detect, isolate, analyze, and correct errors as they occur among elementary and secondary brass students. • evaluate and synthesize method books and literature related to brass class instruction. • demonstrate proficiency on one upper and one lower brass instrument during his or her particular rotation.

Topical Outline
• Understanding how to detect, isolate, analyze, and correct problems associated with the skill development of beginning and intermediate brass players. • Developing the skills necessary to organize a lesson and rehearsal in order to successfully teach beginning and intermediate brass players. • Developing a minimum performance proficiency on one lower and one upper brass instrument. • Creating a reference manual/guide of brass pedagogy materials related to the teaching of school brass students.
